This was our first show since the Magica tour, so we were hungry for some DIO. We drove up to Indy to a couple die hard DIO fans house, Red Head Ernie & Lisa. From there we hit the road & headed out to Verizon Wireless. It started off to a bad start, we went to will call to get our 4 after show passes & after alot of grief they finally gave us only two. My wife & I's names were not even on the list, although one of my guest that I requested passes for was, now hows that for irony. We got down front just in time, around 5:25 pm. We were at the front row, just off center. Ronnie comes on at exactly 6:30, with not very many fans at all there, hardly any down front. The backdrop is of the Dragon on the Killing The Dragon album. The band goes straight for the the heart with the title track Killing The Dragon. This was our first time seeing Doug Aldrich play with DIO. He has a great stage presence, seems kinda laid back. Ronnie couldnt have picked a better replacement for Craig Goldy. I was curious to see how he ranks up with Vivian or Craig, and he holds his ownl, very melodic player. Jimmy is a classic act as always, looked like he had on a smoking jacket or something that you would wear around the house, black pants & a bright red silk shirt with dragons on it. scott was out front this time on keys not hid behind the curtain. Scott too is becoming a staple in DIO, improving every show, he is starting to get the official rock star look. Simon was pounding away all night, he did a great solo with Omen/Damien like erie background music playing to red flashing lights. ronnie was looking cool as always with his black shirt with a skeleton of a dragon on the front. Hard to beleive this band was opening for someone else, so much to play with so little time. Watching Ronnie live in full daylight somehow looses its feel. The red light effect during Heaven & Hell was not what it could have been had it been dark. Three songs from Killing The Dragon, a couple from Sabbath, couple Rainbow & the rest were from Holy Diver & Last In Line. Great show as always, handed Ronnie up my flag of Murray for him to display to the small crowd that was gathering in the front. He seems to always get a kick out of that, it also gets the fans adrenaline pumping, its a great feeling. I got several pics of the band with my small digital camera that a friend snuck in for me. Verizon Center is very strict with lots of rules, absolutely no cameras of any type are allowed. You are frisked at the gate & have to empty your pockets & women must empty their purses. I took about 40 pics with no problems, although I was laying back when shooting trying to conceal the flash. To our suprise Ronnie did not perform Rainbow In The Dark, substituting it for Last In Line. After the set was over we immediately went back stage and me some really great fans. There were a couple guys that we met in the will call line that also had trouble getting their passes, when we saw them backstage he gave me 2 extra passes. They had given him four instead of the two he requested, so he thought they may have been ours. We couldnt thank them enough, I immediately went out & got my wife Hope her friend Tanya. We were backstage the whole time Deep Purple were on stage. I was really wanting to see Purple, although my wife wasnt very excited about seeing them. We got pics with Doug, Simon, Scott, Jimmy, Willie, & of course Ronnie was last to come out. All the guys were great as always, Doug seems to be really down to Earth & connected to his fans. We explained to Ronnie what happened about the passes & he personally put us down for the Cincinnati show the next evening. We got some more pics for Joe & Hope's pics section, fan pics, & lots of live pics, please click the links & check them out. We went back to the front row just as Scorpions had started playing. Scorpions were also great & the venue was getting more crowded. Got several pics of the Scorpions, the band was still full of energy after all those years. I think ticket sales were around 3900, I think Ronnie was a little upset due to the thin audience he was playing for. I knew the next show in Cincinnati would be a completely different atmoshere. Ronnie has lots of fans in Ohio. Another DIO experience was over so we headed to the hotel room to get some rest & get ready to head up to Riverbend in Cincinnati, Ohio. Heres the set list from the show for DIO.
